To get around the deadlock in the Security Council and guarantee that humanitarian aid gets to Gaza, Irish President Michael D. Higgins has asked UN Secretary-General António Guterres to invoke Chapter Seven of the UN Charter.

In a video aired by RTE News, Higgins criticized the “amazing destruction of an entire people” and insisted action has to be taken to prevent women from dying and children from going hungry.

Observing that more than 6,000 food trucks are still stopped, he supported the establishment of an international corridor for aid distribution. Higgins described the circumstances as “outrageous.”

More than 60,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have died as a result of Israel’s attack starting October 7, 2023. The International Court of Justice accuses Israel of genocide, and ICC arrest warrants are out for prominent leaders.
