The chances of finding survivors are dwindling after a massive garbage pile collapsed at a landfill in Cebu City, Philippines, killing at least 11 people and leaving 25 others missing. Rescue teams are facing numerous challenges, including unstable debris, fallen metal structures, and the risk of further collapse, as they continue to search for survivors. Despite detecting signs of life earlier, hopes are fading as the 72-hour window since the landslide has passed.
The collapse, which occurred on January 8, has raised concerns about landfill safety in the Philippines, with critics citing inadequate regulations and enforcement. The Binaliw Landfill, operated by Prime Integrated Waste Solutions, processes 1,000 tons of municipal solid waste daily and is the sole waste disposal facility for Cebu City and surrounding communities.
