Social media giants, including Meta (Instagram and Facebook), Google (YouTube), and TikTok, are facing a landmark trial over allegations that their platforms are designed to be addictive and harm children’s mental health. The lawsuit, filed by a 19-year-old woman identified as K.G.M., claims that these companies intentionally designed their platforms to maximize engagement and profits, despite knowing the risks to young users. K.G.M. alleges that her social media use from an early age led to depression, suicidal thoughts, and self-harm. TikTok and Snapchat have already settled with K.G.M., while Meta and YouTube will proceed to trial, with top executives, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, expected to testify.

The trial could have significant implications for the social media industry and may set a precedent for future lawsuits. The companies argue that they have implemented safety features and policies to protect young users, but critics say these measures are insufficient. The outcome of this trial could influence how social media companies design their platforms and interact with minors.
