When devices get wet, it’s easy to panic and resort to old wives’ tales or quick fixes that might do more harm than good. However, not all advice you hear is accurate. Let’s take a closer look at some common myths surrounding wet devices and what you should actually do instead.

One widespread myth is that putting your device in rice will instantly dry it out. While rice can absorb some moisture, it’s not a guaranteed fix, and small grains can even get stuck in the device’s ports, causing further damage. Another myth is that you should try to charge your device immediately after it gets wet to see if it still works. This can actually cause short circuits, leading to more severe damage.

In reality, the best course of action when your device gets wet is to power it off immediately, gently pat it dry with a soft cloth, and let it air dry in a cool, dry place. Avoid using heat sources like hairdryers, which can cause additional damage to the internal components. By understanding the facts and avoiding these common myths, you can increase the chances of saving your device and avoiding costly repairs.
