Instagram has introduced a significant update to its content settings for teen accounts, aligning them with PG-13 movie ratings. This means users under 18 will see content similar to what’s allowed in a PG-13 movie, with limited exposure to mature themes. The update aims to create a safer and more transparent environment for teens on the platform.
The new settings will restrict posts featuring strong language, risky stunts, drug references, or other mature themes. Teens won’t be able to follow accounts that frequently share age-inappropriate content, and sensitive search terms will be blocked. Instagram will also use age prediction technology to enforce these protections, even if a user tries to register as an adult.
Parents will have more control over their teen’s experience with the “Limited Content” mode, which prevents teens from seeing, writing, or receiving comments under posts. This mode will also limit AI conversations to ensure age-appropriate responses. Meta hopes this update will reassure parents that they’re working to show teens safe, age-appropriate content on Instagram by default. The update is rolling out in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, with plans to expand globally by the end of the year. Meta will also apply similar protections to Facebook Teen Accounts in the near future.
