World Athletics president Sebastian Coe has revealed that the decision to award the 2028 and 2030 World Indoor Championships to Asia was a strategic one. The cities of Bhubaneswar in India and Astana in Kazakhstan were chosen to host the events, marking a significant milestone for the continent. Coe emphasized that Asia is a vast and important market, and this move will help World Athletics gain a stronger foothold in the region.
Coe highlighted the strong sporting infrastructure and leadership in both countries, citing India’s experience in hosting events like the Asian Track and Field Championships and World Cup hockey tournaments. Kazakhstan has also invested heavily in building state-of-the-art indoor athletics facilities. The decision is seen as a stepping stone for India to bid for larger events, including the 2036 Olympics.
