A betting investigation involving the Malta national water polo team has widened, with several players suspected of betting on their own matches at the European Championships in Belgrade. The probe focuses on a match against Montenegro, which Malta lost 21-12, with allegations of attempted match manipulation. Four athletes are currently under investigation, and authorities haven’t ruled out scrutinizing Malta’s subsequent match against France if new information emerges. European Aquatics is aware of the allegations but hasn’t received official communication. The allegations come as a blow to Maltese water polo, which has gained international visibility in recent years. The investigation highlights concerns about integrity in sports betting.
