Coco Gauff suffered a stunning defeat at the United Cup, losing to Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-0, marking her first-ever loss in the tournament. However, the US team bounced back, with Taylor Fritz leveling the tie and Gauff partnering with Christian Harrison to win the mixed doubles 7-6(5), 6-0, securing a quarterfinal spot.
In another surprise, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz returned from a seven-month injury layoff to stun Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-4, giving Poland a 1-0 lead in their Group F tie. Hurkacz, who had knee surgery in July, was nearly flawless, hitting 21 aces and facing just one break point. Iga Swiatek later secured Poland’s win with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Eva Lys.
