Belief is growing inside the host team as Switzerland gets ready to meet Spain in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 quarterfinals in Berne. Going over a turning point in Swiss football history—the men’s 10 triumph against Spain at the 2010 World Cup—head coach Pia Sundhage and her team found inspiration. Johan Djourou, a member of that squad and now on Sundhage’s coaching staff, emphasized how important shared national memory is in unifying the team in his emotional retelling.

Having before brought the United States to Olympic success and won the Euros as a player, Sundhage called the approaching game the most important of her career. She underlined the significance of the event, both personally and nationally, as she battled the reigning world champions on home soil in a knockout match.

Although the tournament got off to a shaky start with a loss to Norway, Switzerland bounced back with a victory against Iceland and a thrilling late draw against Finland. Particularly the exuberant displays from midfielder Géraldine Reuteler and 18-year-old forward Sydney Schertenleib, these performances have revitalised the team and its fans.

Once of Arsenal, defender Noelle Maritz said the audience’s energy was transformational. She praised the team’s lift from enthusiastic home support, pointing out the noticeable increase in unity and spirit throughout recent games.

Still, Spain is a tough opponent. Clear favourites heading into the quarterfinals are they with 14 goals scored and three group-stage wins. Stressing the necessity of calm and tactical awareness, Spanish defender Irene Paredes praised Switzerland’s tight defense and attacking transition play.

Switzerland is not ignorant of the difficulty. Still, the players have a strong belief in their preparation since they have thoroughly examined Spain’s strategy and dedicated themselves to a concentrated approach. This offers them an opportunity to rewrite history rather than only a game.
