The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has expressed ‘great concern’ over the Indonesian government’s decision to deny visas to Israeli gymnasts participating in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta. Despite efforts by the IOC to find a solution, the Indonesian government refused to grant visas to the Israeli athletes, citing objections from Islamic groups and the local government. The Israeli Gymnastics Federation appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but the court rejected the appeal, upholding Indonesia’s decision.

The IOC emphasized that athletes should not be held responsible for political decisions and that sports events should be free from discrimination. According to the IOC, “sport must remain a safe space for athletes to fulfill their dreams; and athletes must not be held responsible for political decisions.” The IOC’s stance is clear: all eligible athletes, teams, and sports officials must be able to participate in international competitions without any form of discrimination from the host country.

This incident has sparked controversy, with many criticizing Indonesia’s decision as a politicization of sports. Morinari Watanabe, president of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), expressed understanding for the IOC’s statement, saying that “sports and politics should be kept separate.” The FIG had tried to find a way for the Israeli team to participate, but ultimately, the decision rested with the Indonesian government.

The exclusion of Israeli gymnasts has raised questions about the role of politics in sports and the ability of athletes to compete freely. The IOC has announced that it will discuss the specific situation of Indonesia at its next Executive Board meeting.
