Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke died on May 11 at the age of 29, the NBA team and his agency Priority Sports confirmed the following day. The Grizzlies announced the news in a statement on Tuesday, saying they were heartbroken by the tragic loss of Clarke and describing him as an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league was devastated to learn of Clarke’s passing, calling him a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit.

Clarke was found dead at a home in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles on May 11. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call for a medical emergency shortly after 5 p.m. and paramedics declared him dead at the scene. Authorities reported that drug paraphernalia was found in the residence and the incident is being investigated as a possible overdose. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has released Clarke’s body but deferred the official cause of death pending toxicology results, and the case remains open.

A month prior to his death, Clarke was arrested on April 1, 2026, in Arkansas after a high-speed chase. He was charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing in a vehicle exceeding the speed limit, and improper passing. The substance was identified as kratom, which is classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance in Arkansas. He was released on bond the following day.

Clarke spent all seven seasons of his NBA career with Memphis after being selected 21st overall in the 2019 draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder and traded to the Grizzlies on draft night. He earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2020 after averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds on 61.8 percent shooting in his debut season. Known for his energy, selflessness, and efficiency off the bench, he appeared in 309 career games and became a key figure in the team’s playoff runs, including a standout 2022 series against Minnesota where he posted 21 points and 15 rebounds in a pivotal Game 5. Injuries limited him in recent years, including a torn Achilles in 2023 and knee and calf issues that held him to just two games in the 2025-26 season.

Off the court, Clarke was active in the Memphis community and launched the Brandon Clarke Foundation in 2025 to help families dealing with tragedy and to support literacy programs for children. Teammates including Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. posted tributes calling his death devastating and saying he was gone way too soon, while fans created a memorial outside FedExForum with flowers, cards, and a poster reading “Always a Memphian! Always a Grizzly! We love you BC.” Priority Sports said its members were beyond devastated, remembering him as the gentlest soul who was first to be there for all of his friends and family. The league, his team, and fans across the NBA continue to mourn the sudden loss of a player widely respected for his character as much as his contributions on the court.
