Following a 22 preseason tie against Everton in Atlanta, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes sharply criticized his team’s “lazy” performance and urged immediate reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
United were robbed of victory by a strange own goal from Ayden Heaven in the 75th minute even though they had leading aims from Fernandes and Mason Mount. The result interfered with an otherwise successful American tour that featured victories against Bournemouth and West Ham.
Fernandes remarked to NBC Sports, “Our performance wasn’t the best; we were a little bit lazy today. You pay with laziness at any minute.”
Coming off their worst-ever Premier League finish, 15th in the 2024–25 campaign, though Fernandes claims it’s insufficient, United already signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
“It’s improving, but not where it needs to be. Clearly we required greater quality and competition. Hopefully we can get one or two more [players].”
Manager Ruben Amorim agreed with Fernandes’s evaluation and noted that the team knows what still needs to be done. On August 17, United plays Arsenal to open their season.
