The upcoming boxing match between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua has sparked intense safety concerns within the boxing community. The significant disparity in size, experience, and skill level between the two fighters has led many to question the wisdom of this matchup. Joshua, a former unified heavyweight champion, towers over Paul at 6’6″ and 252.5 pounds, while Paul stands at 6’1″ and 199.4 pounds.
Experts, including former world heavyweight champion David Haye, warn that Paul is at risk of serious injury, with some even suggesting it could be his “last day on earth”. Amir Khan, a former light-welterweight champion, echoes these concerns, stating that Joshua’s power, size, and experience make him a formidable opponent.
The British Board of Control has stated it would not have approved the fight on safety grounds, citing the gulf in class, physical size, and talent between the two fighters. Despite these concerns, the fight is set to go ahead, with the fighters splitting a staggering $184 million purse.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, describes the matchup as a “catastrophic mismatch”, while Michael Bisping, a UFC hall-of-famer, warns that Paul could be in peril if Joshua takes the fight seriously. The fight’s legitimacy and safety have been widely criticized, with some arguing it prioritizes spectacle over skill.
