Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has been promoted to a top position in the ruling Workers’ Party. She has been named a full department director, a move seen as a significant boost to her influence within the reclusive nation. Kim Yo Jong, previously a deputy department director, is now one of 17 department directors of the party’s new central committee.
This promotion comes as Kim Jong Un was reelected as the party’s general secretary, with delegates crediting him for strengthening the country’s nuclear arsenal and regional standing. The congress, held every five years, provides a rare glimpse into North Korea’s political workings and is seen as a forum for Kim to solidify his grip on power.
Kim Yo Jong has long been considered one of her brother’s closest lieutenants and is known for her influential role in diplomacy, nuclear negotiations, and other state matters. Her promotion has sparked speculation about her potential future role in North Korea’s leadership, particularly in relation to Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, who is seen as a possible heir to the dynasty.
