The George Cross, one of the highest honors for civilian bravery, was awarded to the island nation of Malta by King George VI on April 15, 1942. This prestigious award was given in recognition of the Maltese people’s extraordinary heroism and devotion during World War II. At the time, Malta was a British colony, and its strategic location in the Mediterranean made it a crucial military base for the Allies.

Malta’s bravery during WWII is a remarkable story of resilience and determination. The island was subjected to relentless aerial attacks by the German Luftwaffe and Italian Air Force, with over 6,700 bombs dropped in 154 days. Despite the devastating bombing campaign, the Maltese people remained steadfast in their support for the Allied forces. The country’s location made it a vital hub for military operations, and its people played a significant role in the war effort.

The George Cross was instituted by King George VI on September 24, 1940, to recognize acts of heroism and courage in extreme danger. Malta’s award was one of only three collective awards of the George Cross, and it was a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the Maltese people. The award was formally presented to the people of Malta on September 13, 1942, in a ceremony held in Valletta’s Palace Square.

The George Cross has become an integral part of Malta’s identity and is featured on the country’s national flag. It serves as a reminder of the country’s history and its people’s bravery during WWII. Today, the George Cross is exhibited at the National War Museum in Fort Saint Elmo, Valletta, where it remains a powerful symbol of Malta’s resilience and determination.
