A project has been launched to protect Malta’s beekeepers and the endemic Maltese honey bee, Apis mellifera ruttneri, which was declared the national insect of Malta in September 2024. The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee aims to promote research, selective breeding, and comprehensive legislation to safeguard this unique subspecies.

The Maltese honey bee is known for its adaptability to the local climate, resistance to Varroa destructor mite, and high honey yield. However, it faces threats from climate change, habitat loss, and hybridization with imported honey bees.

The foundation has introduced initiatives like the mascot In-Nahla Katerina and educational music videos to raise awareness about the importance of conserving Malta’s national insect. Beekeepers are also being encouraged to participate in a two-tier system to promote conservation efforts and protect the subspecies.
