Project to Preserve Indigenous Maltese Cattle, Sheep, Goats and Chickens

A project to preserve indigenous Maltese cattle, sheep, goats, and chickens has been launched to safeguard local livestock breeds that are at risk of disappearing. The initiative focuses on identifying remaining animals, documenting their genetics, and establishing breeding programs that maintain pure lines while improving herd health and resilience. Researchers and farmers are working together to collect data on traits like disease resistance, adaptation to Malta’s climate, and traditional uses in farming and food production. By protecting these native breeds, the project aims to maintain agricultural biodiversity, support rural livelihoods, and keep cultural heritage tied to Maltese farming practices alive. The work also includes outreach to encourage breeders to take part, create registries for the animals, and explore sustainable ways to integrate them into modern small-scale agriculture.
