The Nationalist Party is pushing for Enemalta workers on the front lines of recent power cuts to receive special compensation for the extra strain they have faced.
With outages hitting homes and businesses across Malta, Enemalta crews have been working long hours, often through the night and in difficult conditions, to restore supply and keep the grid stable. The PN says that effort deserves to be recognized financially, not just with thanks.
Party representatives argue that these workers have been dealing with increased pressure at a time when public frustration is high and expectations are even higher. Faults, emergency call-outs, and round-the-clock shifts have become part of the routine as the network struggles to meet demand during peak periods. For the PN, that level of commitment should come with concrete support.
The call is framed as both a gesture of appreciation and a practical step. Fair compensation, they say, would acknowledge the sacrifice of staff while also helping with morale at a utility that is under intense public scrutiny. It is also meant to send a message that the people fixing the problem on the ground should not be overlooked while discussions about infrastructure and policy continue.
The government has not yet responded to the proposal. As debates about energy reliability continue, the PN’s request puts the focus back on the workers who are out in the heat, in substations, and on the streets trying to get the lights back on.
