Malta was recently represented by two Maltese students at the 2025 European Money Quiz finals in Brussels, which is Europe’s biggest financial literacy contest for 13 to 15-year-old students. The European Banking Federation (EBF) organized the competition, which featured national champions from 30 nations.
Owen Bartolo from Maria Regina College Mosta Zokrija Secondary School and Thea Muscat from St Nicholas College Dingli Secondary School qualified for the finals by winning Malta’s National Money Quiz. As part of European Money Week 2025, the Malta Bankers’ Association (MBA) organized the local competition in coordination with the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation’s Department of Accounting and Business Studies. The MBA provided full sponsorship for their participation in the Brussels finals.
The students participated in a two-day competition covering financial subjects such as cybersecurity, cryptocurrencies, long-term planning, responsible credit use, budgeting, and saving. Over 73,000 students from almost 2,900 schools throughout Europe participated in this year’s quiz.
The students took part in an educational program hosted by the EBF in addition to the competition. A bell-ringing ceremony at Euronext, a tour of the Parlamentarium, the visitor center of the European Parliament, and a visit to the Wikifin Lab at Belgium’s Financial Services and Markets Authority were among the events. Additionally, they interacted with peers from all over Europe, sharing their perspectives and experiences.
The MBA’s Secretary General, Karol Gabarretta, commended the students’ performance, saying: “We are proud of the Maltese students who represented our country with enthusiasm and confidence.” Their enthusiasm is a reflection of how much value we place on financial literacy as a basic life skill.
The European Money Quiz is a component of larger initiatives to raise financial literacy on the continent. Later this year, a new European Financial Literacy Strategy will be introduced by the European Commission. The MBA and other national partners, along with the EBF, are still dedicated to supporting this effort.
