Maltese Cyclists set out 1,000 km ride from Berlin to Salzburg for cancer research.
Support for cancer research is being provided by a group of Maltese cyclists now in Germany participating in the ALIVE 2025 Cycling Challenge, a 1,000km charitable ride from Berlin to Salzburg.
Riders travel Dresden, Prague, Linz, and end in Salzburg, Austria.
Among the participants is Massimo Vella, coming back to the challenge ten years after his first ride in 2015.
“This cause is personal now; cancer has impacted friends and family, so it inspires me to help as I can,” Vella stated.
Organised by the first Maltese NGO exclusively focused on cancer research, the project hopes to exceed €1 million in all donations to the Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT) of the University of Malta.
ALIVE has generated more than €920,000 since 2013 for projects including:
€135,000 for breast cancer research
Children’s cancer research gets €170,000.
A leisure area at Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre costs €80,000.
€227,000 to support seven PhD cancer research initiatives
In 2022, 2023, and 2024, ALIVE collected over €300,000 via its cycling events despite the pandemic’s interruption.
Early detection, creative therapy, and rehabilitation—key pillars in the battle against cancer—are once more pushed on this year’s ride.
