Tensions in Tripoli have escalated significantly, prompting the evacuation of 38 Maltese citizens from Libya. The clashes, which have been described as the worst in years, involve powerful armed factions vying for control in the city. According to reports, the fighting began when the Special Deterrence Force seized 444 Brigade commander Mahmoud Hamza as he attempted to travel, leading to a violent exchange between the two groups.

The situation on the ground remains dire, with residents and local media reporting fighting in different suburbs, and dark smoke hanging over parts of the city. The sound of heavy weapons has rattled through the streets, causing widespread fear and uncertainty. The Health Ministry has appealed for citizens to donate blood to help casualties, and medical units have reported recovering bodies from affected areas.

The United Nations has called for an immediate end to the violence, emphasizing the need for dialogue to resolve the conflict. The clashes have shattered months of relative calm in Tripoli, highlighting the ongoing struggle for power and stability in Libya. The country’s complex history of conflict, including the 2011 NATO-backed uprising and subsequent division between eastern and western factions, continues to impact its security and governance.

In light of the escalating violence, evacuation efforts have been prioritized to ensure the safety of foreign nationals, including the 38 Maltese citizens who have been successfully evacuated. The situation remains volatile, with concerns about potential spillover effects and the humanitarian impact on local populations.
