Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela is set to recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. This decision reflects Malta’s commitment to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. Abela’s announcement follows similar moves by the British and French governments, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron also planning to recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly.

The recognition of Palestine by Malta, the UK, and France signifies growing international momentum in support of Palestinian statehood. Currently, 147 out of 193 UN member states have recognized Palestine as a sovereign state. Malta has long supported the Palestinian cause and the two-state solution as the basis for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Abela’s decision comes amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in significant loss of life and instability in the region. By recognizing Palestine, Malta aims to contribute to efforts aimed at achieving a lasting peace in the Middle East. This move is part of a broader trend of countries extending formal recognition to Palestine, with several European nations doing so in recent times.
