The Maltese government has allocated €439,000 to provide free period products to all schools, aiming to reduce stigma around menstruation and promote menstrual health awareness. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable low-income families, women, and girls. By providing easy access to essential hygiene products, the government hopes to decrease female student absenteeism and alleviate the financial burden on families.

A pilot project was launched in three schools, providing 900 female students with access to free menstrual products through specialized machines. The success of this project has paved the way for the government to expand this initiative to middle and secondary schools. The move is seen as a significant step towards promoting gender equality and improving the quality of life for women in Malta.

The government’s decision to make period products tax-free is also expected to alleviate the financial burden on women and girls. This initiative aligns with the European Union’s legislation to reduce or eliminate VAT on women’s hygiene products. By prioritizing menstrual health and hygiene, Malta is working towards creating a more equitable society where everyone has access to basic necessities without financial hardship.
