Malta is playing a significant role in shaping the European Union’s vehicle safety standards. The country has recognized technical services, such as GreenKar Technical Service Ltd., that are designated by EU Type Approval Authorities to issue Individual/Single Vehicle Approval Certificates. This aligns with the EU’s General Safety Regulation (GSR), which mandates eight specific automatic driver assistance safety features for new vehicles registered from July 2024, including emergency stop signals, tyre pressure monitoring systems, and blind spot information systems.

The EU’s GSR is part of its ‘Vision Zero’ initiative, aiming for zero fatalities and serious injuries on European roads by 2050. Malta, as an EU member, is contributing to this goal by implementing and enforcing these safety standards. The country’s technical services, like GreenKar, work with international organizations to ensure compliance with EU regulations.

Malta’s efforts are also supported by the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA), which oversees product safety and technical regulations, including vehicle safety standards. The MCCAA collaborates with EU authorities to promote harmonization and mutual recognition of safety standards.
