The United States has eliminated its de minimis exemption, a rule that previously allowed shipments valued under $800 to enter the country duty-free. As of August 29, 2025, all imports, regardless of value, will be subject to tariffs and customs scrutiny. This change affects MaltaPost’s operations, potentially disrupting shipments to the US.

The suspension of duty-free treatment aims to address national security and economic concerns. Shipments will now require formal customs entries, additional processing, and paperwork, increasing administrative overhead and potentially longer transit times. Businesses and individuals sending packages to the US will need to adapt to these new regulations.

While international postal shipments were initially exempt from the suspension, they will soon be subject to the new rules. The US government aims to ensure compliance with customs regulations and collect duties on low-value imports. This change may impact MaltaPost’s services and shipping times, causing delays as the company navigates the reintroduction of services and clears the current backlog.
