Malta is set to formally recognize the State of Palestine in September, according to Prime Minister Robert Abela. This decision comes as a response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with Abela emphasizing that recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state is a “moral responsibility” and a matter of justice and human dignity. Malta’s recognition of Palestine would align with 147 other UN member states that already acknowledge Palestine as a sovereign state.

Abela’s announcement highlights the growing international support for Palestinian statehood, with countries like Ireland, Norway, Spain, Slovenia, Armenia, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Barbados recently joining the list of nations recognizing Palestine. However, some key Western powers, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia, have yet to officially recognize Palestinian statehood.

This move by Malta demonstrates its commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and promoting justice and dignity for the Palestinian people. The recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state would have significant implications for the region and the international community, and Malta’s decision is seen as a step towards promoting peace and stability in the area.
