Gozo’s Mġarr harbour is struggling to cope with the rapid growth in traffic, exceeding the highest forecasts and prompting concerns about infrastructure and sustainability. The harbour, a vital link between Malta and Gozo, has seen a significant increase in trips, vehicles, and passengers, with a 3.8% rise in trips, 3% increase in vehicle movements, and 7.4% growth in passengers in 2025 compared to the previous year. The Gozo Business Chamber has called for urgent investment in Mġarr Harbour infrastructure, improved Gozo Channel operations, and expansion of fast ferry services to address the issue.
A task force has been established to address the infrastructural improvements needed at Mġarr Harbour, focusing on enhancing efficiency, preserving cultural significance, and ensuring long-term sustainability. The move aims to revitalize the harbour, boost the local economy, and improve amenities for passengers and residents.
