FinanceMalta, the organization responsible for developing Malta’s financial center, has been actively engaged in promoting the country’s fintech sector. Although specific information on FinanceMalta signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan is not available, a similar partnership was established between Malta Enterprise and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd in 2012. This agreement aimed to foster cooperation between Malta and Japan in industrial investment and trade, including the financial services sector.

The potential collaboration between Malta and Japan could create new opportunities for fintech companies. Malta’s fintech sector has been growing rapidly, positioning the country as a hub for innovative fintech companies. The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) has established a FinTech Regulatory Sandbox, providing a controlled environment for fintech firms to test innovative products and services.

Malta’s FinTech Innovation Hub offers firms guidance on regulatory matters and shared resources, including operational infrastructure. The country has clearly established regulatory frameworks for Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs), Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), and virtual currencies. Malta’s strategic location and international connectivity make it an attractive hub for fintech companies looking to access European and African markets.

The government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the fintech sector is evident in initiatives such as infusing emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) into government services. This supportive environment, combined with a wealth of talent in both tech and finance, makes Malta an attractive destination for fintech companies.
