Power has finally been restored in parts of Valletta after residents spent more than 30 hours in the dark, following what Enemalta described as a “complex” repair operation in the capital.
The outage began unexpectedly and quickly affected homes, shops, and businesses across the city. With Valletta’s dense, historic infrastructure, crews said accessing and fixing the fault was not straightforward. Narrow streets, underground cabling, and the need to avoid damage to heritage buildings meant engineers had to work carefully and in stages.
For more than a day, residents coped with no electricity for fridges, elevators, and payment systems, while restaurants and retailers were forced to close or run on generators. Enemalta teams worked through the night, isolating sections of the network and rerouting supply where possible until the main fault could be fully repaired.
The utility said the delay was due to the nature of the problem rather than a lack of resources, calling it one of the more difficult jobs in recent months because of Valletta’s unique layout. Officials thanked the public for their patience and said additional checks would be carried out to prevent a repeat.
By this morning, power was back across the affected areas and businesses began reopening. For many in the city, the restoration came as a relief, but the long outage has also renewed calls for more investment and modernization in the capital’s aging power network.
