AX Group has funded the conservation of three masterpieces by Mattia Preti at the Jesuits’ Church in Valletta, supporting a major effort to preserve key works of Malta’s Baroque heritage. The project focuses on restoring the paintings to stabilize their condition, address deterioration, and ensure their long-term protection for public viewing. The three works form an important part of Preti’s legacy in Malta, reflecting his influence on the island’s artistic and religious history during his time as a knight of the Order of St John.
Conservators carried out detailed analysis before beginning treatment, using scientific techniques to assess paint layers, varnish, and structural damage caused by age, humidity, and past interventions. The restoration process involved careful cleaning, consolidation of flaking paint, and retouching to maintain the integrity of Preti’s original technique while improving legibility for future generations. AX Group’s sponsorship enabled specialists to work with the necessary materials and expertise, underscoring the role of private sector support in cultural preservation.
The conserved masterpieces will remain on display at the Jesuits’ Church, allowing both local audiences and international visitors to engage with Preti’s art in its intended setting. The initiative highlights the ongoing need for investment in heritage conservation and reinforces the value of partnerships between business and cultural institutions in safeguarding Malta’s artistic patrimony.
