Maltese singer and X-Factor judge Alexandra Alden has been disqualified from the Malta Eurovision Song Contest (MESC) 2025 due to a rule violation. Alden’s song “Magnolia” was released prior to the eligibility date of November 30, violating the contest’s rules that prohibit songs from being published before this date.
According to the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest, participating songs must not be released or publicly performed before September 1. Alden expressed regret over the decision, stating she had informed PBS, the Maltese broadcaster, about the situation transparently and professionally. Despite her efforts to rectify the issue, PBS decided to disqualify her entry.
The decision has led to Dario Bezzina and Å»eppi l-Muni taking Alden’s place in the competition with their song “Għażliet”. The Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2025 will proceed with 23 artists competing in two semi-finals on February 4 and 6, followed by the grand final on February 8. Alden’s disqualification highlights the importance of adhering to contest rules, ensuring a fair competition for all participants.
