In a surprising turn of events, an Opposition MP has publicly stated that Carmelo Abela deserves to be a minister. This endorsement comes despite Abela’s involvement in several controversies, including allegations of his role in a 2010 HSBC bank heist.¹ The MP’s statement has raised eyebrows, especially given Abela’s chequered past. Abela has served as Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion, and even as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta. His experience and credentials make him a formidable candidate for ministerial roles.
However, Abela’s tenure has not been without controversy. He has been accused of helping the mastermind of the 2010 HSBC bank heist, with brothers Alfred and George Degiorgio claiming that Abela provided them with access to the bank’s safe room. Abela has categorically denied these allegations and even sued lawyer Jason Azzopardi for libel. Despite these challenges, the Opposition MP’s endorsement suggests that Abela’s experience and skills make him an attractive candidate for a ministerial role.
It remains to be seen how this endorsement will impact Abela’s future in politics. One thing is certain, however – this development has added a new layer of complexity to Malta’s political landscape.
