Repubblika, a Maltese civil society organization, has strongly condemned the government’s failure to publish assets declarations, describing it as a “retrograde step” that undermines transparency and accountability. The organization’s statement comes after it was revealed that the government had failed to publish the annual assets declarations of public officials, including ministers, members of parliament, and other high-ranking government employees.

Repubblika argued that the publication of assets declarations is a crucial tool in the fight against corruption and ensuring that public officials are transparent about their financial interests. By failing to publish these declarations, the government is essentially shielding its officials from scrutiny and creating an environment in which corruption can thrive. This move is particularly concerning given Malta’s recent history of high-profile corruption scandals, which have damaged the country’s reputation and eroded public trust in institutions.

The organization also pointed out that the failure to publish assets declarations is a clear breach of Malta’s obligations under international anti-corruption conventions. Repubblika is calling on the government to immediately publish the outstanding assets declarations and to take concrete steps to strengthen transparency and accountability mechanisms. The organization warned that failure to do so would further undermine public trust in government and damage Malta’s reputation as a trustworthy and transparent democracy.
