Doctors are calling for clear guidelines on whether to report abortions, citing concerns of being scapegoated amidst changing laws and regulations. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act allows abortion up to 20 weeks, with exceptions beyond 24 weeks for fetal abnormalities or risks to the woman’s health. However, mandatory reporting requirements and conflicting laws, such as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, have created uncertainty for healthcare providers.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) emphasizes that abortion is essential healthcare and advocates for removing barriers to access. In India, the Delhi High Court has directed medical boards to provide clear reports on abortion requests beyond 24 weeks, highlighting the need for precise guidelines.
