Plastics have become an integral part of our daily lives, from packaging and disposable cutlery to electronics and vehicles. However, the staggering environmental impact of plastics has reached alarming levels, with millions of tons of plastic waste polluting our oceans, harming marine life, and contaminating the food chain. The roots of this problem can be traced back to a clever marketing myth perpetuated by the plastics industry in the mid-20th century. The idea that plastics are cheap, convenient, and disposable was aggressively promoted, leading to a culture of single-use plastics and a throwaway society.

The narrative around plastics’ convenience and recyclability was exaggerated, and the public largely bought into it. As a result, plastic production has skyrocketed, with over 400 million tons produced annually, and the environmental consequences are dire. The myth of plastics’ convenience has become a self-perpetuating problem, with manufacturers prioritizing profit over sustainability and consumers often unaware of the impact of their choices.
