Adolescence became the first ever streaming show to top the weekly TV rating in the UK. The initial episode was watched by 6.45 million people, beating the thriller television series Fool Me Once on Netflix in January 2024.
The drama, created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, has become the most-watched streaming TV show in the UK in a single week since its March 13 release. The four-part series follows Jamie, a 13-year-old boy who fatally stabs a female classmate, prompting an exploration of online misogyny and incel culture.

Inspired by rising knife crime among young boys in the UK, the series has sparked significant political debate. Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged its impact, stating that online radicalization of young men is a serious issue. Thorne highlighted concerns beyond high-profile figures like Andrew Tate, pointing to subtle misogynistic content in gaming and blogs as equally dangerous.
The show’s influence has led to discussions on school smartphone bans, with Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson committing to further review policies. Meanwhile, Labour MP Anneliese Midgley has proposed screening the series in schools and parliament to raise awareness of misogyny and violence against women.

Netflix has shared insights into the making of Adolescence, highlighting the effort behind its impact. Each episode was filmed in a single continuous shot, a technique director Stephen Barantini previously used in Boiling Point.
Originally planned for 10 takes per episode, filming required multiple additional attempts due to external factors. Actors rehearsed in short intervals, gradually building up to full run-throughs. While precision was key, some improvisations and minor mistakes were incorporated into the final cut.
