Daniel H. Coakley

Daniel H. Coakley was a prominent figure in  the early twentieth century Massachusetts Politics. His career was mixed in corruption scandals involving the sale of pardons. Coakley was disbarred in 1922 for extortion, misconduct and deceit. But his powerful political connections enabled him to continue exerting his influence.

Coakley was closely associated with  Mayor James Michael Curley . He was an on and off ally of the Mayor and the District Attorney Joseph C. Pelletier. He was closely tied to powerful figures like John F. Fitzgerald, the grandfather of John F. Kennedy, and was elected to the Massachusetts Governor’s Council in 1932.

Daniel Coakley’s impeachment and removal in 1941 ended his long and notorious career in Massachusetts and Boston politics. Born in 1865, Coakley worked as a teamster, streetcar conductor, and sportswriter before being disbarred in 1922 for deceit, malpractice, and gross misconduct. He was elected as a member of the Governor’s Council in 1932 and was reelected in 1936, 1938, and 1940.

Coakley’s impeachment was the first of a Massachusetts officer since the impeachment of Probate Court Judge James Prescott in 1821. The articles against Coakley were personally prosecuted by Attorney General Robert Bushnell, and he was removed from office by a vote of 28-10. By the terms of the Constitution, he was barred from any office of honor, trust, or profit in the Commonwealth.
