Russian singer Gubaidulina was born during the Soviet Socialist Republic. She always had an ardent desire for music from a very young age. At the age of 5, Gubaidulina learned to play the piano. These early experiences with music and spiritual ideas led her to treat these two domains of thought as conceptually similar, which explains her later striving to write music expressing and exploring spiritually based concepts.
Marking her 90th birthday, conductor Andris Nelsons and the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig released an album containing three huge symphonic pieces, each with deeply metaphysical underpinnings. One of the best works on the album, The Wrath of God, opens with a horde of snarling tubas and ends with a wink and a rhythmic nod to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
Gubaidulina died from cancer at her home in Appen on 13 March 2025, at the age of 93. Though she has died, her music lives among us forever .
“Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us”
– Martin Luther
