Bordeaux is bracing for the worst as wildfires burn across southwestern France, with the city’s mayor saying officials are “ready for anything” to protect residents and surrounding communities.

The mayor warned that while flames have not yet reached the city center, the risk remains high due to extreme heat, strong winds, and tinder-dry conditions in nearby forests. Emergency teams have been put on high alert, with additional firefighters, water tankers, and aircraft positioned around the Gironde region. Evacuation plans for nearby towns and suburbs have also been reviewed and updated in case the fire front shifts toward urban areas.

Local authorities have been coordinating closely with national emergency services and the EU’s civil protection mechanism to bring in extra support. The focus right now is on creating firebreaks, protecting critical infrastructure, and keeping communication lines open so residents get updates quickly if the situation changes.

The mayor urged people to stay vigilant, avoid non-essential travel near forested zones, and follow official instructions. “Bordeaux is prepared, but nature decides,” he said, adding that the priority is saving lives and limiting damage to homes, vineyards, and the region’s natural landscapes.

With temperatures expected to stay high in the coming days, the threat has not passed. For now, Bordeaux remains on edge but mobilized, with officials determined to respond fast if the fires come any closer.
