The Malta Basketball Association has appointed Paul Ferrante as the new head coach of the Malta men’s national basketball team, entrusting him with immediate responsibility for leading the squad into the next phase of international competition. Ferrante brings to the role an extensive and proven coaching pedigree built over decades within the Maltese game, having guided clubs at both the senior men’s and women’s levels and capturing multiple championship titles with two separate clubs. His experience is not confined to the domestic league, as he has also represented Maltese basketball on the international stage through FIBA youth competitions staged in Kosovo and San Marino in 2018, and earlier in his career he gained valuable exposure through the FISEC Games and Jeux des Îles. Beyond the court, Ferrante is a respected educator who has dedicated the past 34 years to teaching at one of Malta’s leading independent schools, a background that has shaped his emphasis on development, discipline, and long-term player growth.

Ferrante assumes the position following the departure of former Head Coach Duncan Fenech, whom the MBA thanked for his dedication and contribution over the past two years. The new coach now begins preparations for a significant test on the calendar: the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries 2026, scheduled to take place in Gibraltar between 23 and 28 June. Malta will compete in a group alongside hosts Gibraltar, Andorra, and San Marino, and Ferrante’s immediate task will be to assess the player pool, implement his system, and build a competitive squad capable of performing on that stage. The appointment signals the Association’s intent to maintain continuity while injecting fresh direction into the national program, leveraging Ferrante’s blend of local knowledge, international experience, and educational ethos to strengthen Malta’s presence in European basketball.
