A new MRI scanner is being installed at St Vincent De Paul Residence in Malta, aiming to reduce the waiting list for MRI scans and alleviate pressure on Mater Dei Hospital. The scanner, funded by the National Social Development and Social Fund at a cost of €2 million, will focus on diagnosing and treating elderly individuals. This move is expected to significantly reduce the island’s waiting list, currently standing at 15,750 patients. The government has also been outsourcing MRI services to the private sector to cope with the rising demand. Another MRI machine is being procured for Gozo General Hospital, and a portable MRI machine will serve as a temporary solution.
