Estonia and Lithuania are facing potential EU sanctions for refusing to face Belarus in a tournament held in Malta. The decision comes amid broader EU measures against Belarus, including sanctions targeting individuals and entities supporting the country’s military-industrial complex and actions undermining EU stability.
The European Union has been pressuring countries to take a firm stance against Belarus due to its support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In a related development, UEFA has been urged to ban Belarus from competitions, but so far, only hosting rights for the 2025 Women’s Under-19 European Championship have been stripped.
