The European Union has announced that member states can utilize existing social funds to support women seeking abortion services, particularly those from countries with restrictive abortion laws like Malta and Poland. This decision is a response to the “My Voice, My Choice” campaign, which gathered over 1.2 million signatures, advocating for equal access to safe abortion services across the EU. The European Commission clarified that member states can tap into the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) to cover travel and related medical costs for vulnerable women seeking abortions abroad.

The move is seen as a victory for women’s rights, with Equality Commissioner Hadja Lahbib stating that the decision could help reduce the estimated 500,000 unsafe abortions occurring in Europe annually. However, critics argue that this infringes on national healthcare sovereignty and contradicts traditional values. The EU’s decision allows member states to apply for ESF+ resources, but the success of this initiative depends on individual governments’ willingness to repurpose funds.
