Musicians are sounding the alarm over AI-generated tracks impersonating them on streaming platforms, with some calling it the “easiest scam in the world”. Artists like British folk musician Emily Portman and Australian musician Paul Bender have discovered AI-generated songs on their profiles, with the fake tracks mimicking their style and sound. These scams aim to siphon off royalties, exploiting the lack of security measures on streaming platforms. The AI-generated music is virtually undetectable, with 97% of people unable to tell the difference between AI and human-made tracks, according to a Deezer study.
The issue is widespread, with 34% of new music on Deezer being AI-generated, and AI-created bands like The Velvet Sundown garnering millions of subscribers on Spotify. Artists are urging platforms to step up security and transparency, with some calling for lower payouts for AI-generated music. Spotify has announced measures to detect and tag AI-generated tracks, but the industry is still grappling with the implications of AI music.
