Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez has been ruled out of Spain’s squad for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Georgia and Bulgaria due to a hamstring injury. The Spanish Football Federation confirmed the news on Monday, October 6, 2025, after Rodri was forced off the field in the 21st minute of City’s 2-0 Premier League win over Brentford on Sunday. Rodri, who plays as a midfielder, had been experiencing discomfort in his hamstring during the match and was replaced by Nico Gonzalez.

This injury is a significant blow to Spain’s national team, given Rodri’s crucial role in their midfield. He was a key player in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph and has been instrumental in Manchester City’s success. Rodri had only recently returned from a serious knee injury that sidelined him for most of last season. The midfielder’s absence will likely impact Spain’s chances in the World Cup qualifiers, and coach Luis de la Fuente will need to explore other midfield options.

Rodri’s recovery will be closely monitored by Manchester City’s medical team, and it’s expected that he’ll be out for a few weeks. In fact, Rodri has expressed optimism about his recovery, stating that he hopes to be available for Manchester City’s match against Everton in two weeks. Despite the injury not being considered serious, it’s a precautionary measure to ensure Rodri doesn’t exacerbate the issue.

Spain has already suffered another blow with the absence of young Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal due to a groin ailment. Celta Vigo forward Borja Iglesias has been drafted in to fill in for Yamal, but it’s unclear whether another player will be called up to replace Rodri.
