Alex Borg has made history by becoming the leader of the Nationalist Party in Malta. Borg’s journey to the top was nothing short of meteoric, with internal party surveys positioning him as the top choice even before the leadership election. Following Bernard Grech’s resignation as leader of the Nationalist Party in June 2025, Borg formally submitted his declaration of interest for the leadership role.
The party’s Electoral, Records, and Data Commission confirmed Borg’s submission, and after a closely contested election, he emerged victorious, beating Adrian Delia by a razor-thin majority of 44 votes. The Electoral Commission formally confirmed Borg as the leader at 4:00 AM on September 7, 2025. At just 30 years old, Borg is set to become the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
Borg’s ascent to the leadership position is notable not only for his age but also for his background. Born in Victoria, Gozo, Borg is the son of Mary Debono Borg and Tony Borg, who served as chief of staff to former Minister for Gozo Giovanna Debono. Before his political career, Borg was a model and won the Mr. World Malta title in 2020.
