Indicating Qatar’s desire to host the event, the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has verified that it is still negotiating with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about the selection criteria for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
With other nations such Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Egypt, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Denmark, and Canada also expressing interest, Qatar joins a rising number of countries competing for the Games including India, Indonesia, Turkey, and Chile.
Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of QOC, stated, “We currently have 95% of the needed sports infrastructure in place,” adding, “We have a comprehensive national plan to guarantee 100% readiness, based on a vision of social, economic, and environmental sustainability.”
Having previously hosted the Asian Games in 2006, Doha, Qatar’s capital is already scheduled to do so in 2030. Qatar has also lately hosted significant international events including the 2024 AFC Asian Cup and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Should Qatar be successful, it would be the first Middle Eastern country to stage the Olympics, hence highlighting the increasing impact of the area in world sports. The 2034 FIFA World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia, so emphasizing this tendency even more.
Still to be revealed by the IOC is the timetable for choosing the 2036 host city.
