FC Barcelona has extended the contract of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny until 2027, following an impressive season that saw the team win La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Szczesny, 35, joined Barcelona mid-season after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a ruptured patella tendon injury and proved himself to be a valuable addition to the team. His contract renewal has, however, raised questions about Ter Stegen’s future at the club.
The German goalkeeper, 33, commands a high salary at Barcelona, and the financially struggling club may look to make savings in this regard. Barcelona’s signing of goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol for 26.34 million euros on a six-year deal has further complicated Ter Stegen’s situation. Despite Ter Stegen insisting he has no plans to leave, the extension of Szczesny’s deal and Garcia’s arrival cast doubt over his long-term prospects at the club.
