European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has appointed her trusted aide and brother-in-law, Matthew Tabone, as the head of her cabinet, a move that has sparked both praise and criticism. Tabone, who has been a key member of Metsola’s team since 2013, takes on the role after previously leading various teams within the cabinet, including a transparency reform initiative and coordinating the President’s engagement with the European public ahead of the 2023 elections.
The appointment comes after Leticia Zuleta De Reales Ansaldo vacated the position to become Director for Relations with National Parliaments within the European Parliament. Tabone’s promotion was initially considered in 2022, but was put on hold due to concerns over nepotism and undue influence amid the Qatargate scandal. However, as Tabone is not a first-degree relative, the appointment does not violate EP rules.
As head of cabinet, Tabone will earn a salary of €15,000-€20,000 per month and be responsible for maintaining relations with political groups, administrative units, and other institutions. His experience and expertise have earned him recognition as one of Brussels’ Top 40 most powerful people by Politico in 2023.
While some have praised Tabone’s appointment as a well-deserved recognition of his skills and dedication, others have raised concerns about the potential for favoritism and the impact on the European Parliament’s image. As the institution continues to navigate the fallout from the Qatargate scandal, Metsola’s decision will undoubtedly face scrutiny. Nevertheless, Tabone’s appointment underscores his significant influence within the European Parliament and his crucial role in shaping the President’s agenda.
