The Candidates eligible are Roberta Metsola and Irene Montero to be elected, a candidate needs an absolute majority of valid votes cast, i.e 50% plus one. If no candidate is elected in the first round of voting, the same or other candidates can be nominated for a second round under the same conditions. A third round may take place if necessary, again with the same rules. If none of the candidates are elected in the third round of voting, the two candidates with the most votes in the third round would proceed to a fourth and final round of voting, in which the candidate receiving the most votes wins and is elected as the New president.

Metsola said she had accepted the position with humility and would work everyday to meet people’s expectations, ensuring that Europe is accessible to everyone and a better place. She thanked all those who contributed to the creation and development of the European Union, as well as its democratic principles and standards, which include rule of law and equal treatment. The importance of the EU’s strategic independence, stability, global competitiveness. She also called on the EU to address climate change in a real way.

Unity and Security

When addressed about unity and Security she said that “The polarisation of our societies has led to more confrontationist politics, including policy violence” she went on. The simple answers that have divided our communities into two distinct categories, namely us and them. We need to move from this zero sum thinking which excludes people and keeps them out of the game. Instead of building hope and belief, it fuels anger and hate.We understand that the comfort of easy extremism offers no real solutions.

This is the house that’s against it. That wants to build rather than destroy. That is not afraid to take the difficult path. That is able to find and use it’s voice for the common good. That’s the counter to autocracy;it doubles as a means of defending the rule of law, and understands that we must all be equally represented in Europe.“Metsola told the MEPS that they shared a responsibility to leave Europe a better place than the one they found.

About the Russian war between Ukraine and Middle East

Metsola said the Russian war of aggression against sovereign Ukraine remained at the top of the EP’s agenda.“We’re going to have to do more of it.” We’ve got to be ready to go beyond what we are comfortable with and do whatever it takes. We’re doing this because Europe needs to be independent for peace – a real peace with justice, with dignity and with liberty.

Because we’re able to heal seemingly insurmountable divides in Europe. That must also be the guiding philosophy of our reaction to the conflict in the Middle East, where even in the fog of war ours must continue to be the voice of humanity pushing for an end to the intergenerational cycle of violence, for a two State Solution, a sustainable peace and the return of those hostages still taken.
